About the Performance
This concert’s program features quintessential erhu classics such as Moon Reflected on the Erquan Spring and Birds Singing in a Desolate Mountain, alongside Lu Yiwen’s tender Variations on the Theme of Salut d’Amour. The highlight, however, lies in a series of newly arranged works for erhu and string quartet. Among them are instantly recognizable melodies like Jasmine Flower and Sunshine Over Tashkurgan, which evoke collective nostalgia for Chinese audiences; Chen Yi’s Huqin Suite, a masterful fusion of folk motifs and Western composition; and reimagined Western classics such as Zigeunerweisen, Humoresque, Por Una Cabeza, and Liebesleid, infused with contemporary romantic flair.
As fellow bowed-string instruments, the erhu and Western string quartet will intertwine to create a dialogue between Eastern and Western tonalities, reinterpreting timeless works through a modern lens and embodying the convergence of tradition and innovation, China and the world.
