About the Performance
Franz Schubert, the "King of Art Songs," once declared Winterreise (Winter Journey) his favorite among all his compositions. This immortal song cycle, written in the final years of his life, sets 24 poems by Romantic poet Wilhelm Müller to music, tracing a wanderer’s journey as he abandons his lover, home, and all warmth of life, trudging alone through a desolate, ice-bound world. Even as biting winds sweep the snow-covered earth, the protagonist refuses to halt his steps toward life’s inevitable end. Schubert’s music vividly contrasts the protagonist’s inner emotional fire with the external winter bleakness.
