THE PIPA:A UNIVERSE OF SOUND

About the Performance

When ancient strings meet contemporary inspiration, this concert becomes more than a performance—it is a multisensory spiritual journey that allows the audience to glimpse their own "pipa universe" through the interplay of sound and meaning.

They met in Dali, Yunnan, during a spontaneous improvisation where they heard the breath and pulse in each other’s music—and so, the "Double Pipa" duo was born. Hu Pingting, a deeply traditional interpreter, and Lan Ruping, a boundary-crossing explorer of diverse realms, found resonance in their shared understanding. Together, they create a dialogue between two pipas that are both complementary and dynamically challenging.

Guided by Nietzsche’s philosophical themes of "Dream and Intoxication" and inspired by the responsive energy of the Xian Hexagram from the I Ching, this concert offers a fresh perspective on the pipa—"Pipa Is the Universe." Four movements, four journeys:

In Dream, intimate ancient melodies evoke the clarity and tenderness of childhood music practice.

In Intoxication, fervent notes pour forth like Dionysian ecstasy, unleashing the passion of life.

In Universe, having traversed dream and intoxication, they meet in a boundless galaxy of sound.

Finally, Mirror · Reflection allows two hearts to mirror and converse with one another, converging into a unique expression of the pipa’s world.
